#2 Olympics rocked by frightening scenes as runner collapses on track during 10,000m final

‘There were scary scenes on the athletics track at the Olympics on Friday night when French runner Alessia Zarbo collapsed towards the end of the women's 10,000m final.’

‘But there were huge concerns for Zarbo, who collapsed to the track in frightening fashion and required medical assistance. The Frenchwoman lay prone on the track and appeared to lose consciousness, with medical staff rushing to her aid as the race continued around her.’

‘Zarbo was taken from the track on a stretcher and received a rousing applause from her home crowd. A hush had fallen over the spectators inside State de France when Zarbo collapsed, and there were some agonising moments as she lay on the track and her competitors kept running. TV viewers were left rattled by the scary scenes and took to social media to send their well-wishes.’

Luckily TV medical experts were on hand to assuage our fears.

‘“We have a runner down. I think that’s the Frenchwoman Alessia Zarbo,” one TV commentator said. “It is quite humid and quite sticky and maybe the whole emotion of the occasion has got her as well.”’

‘The annual event opened for the first time in Fort Worth on Thursday morning and was scheduled to run through Sunday. During the inaugural run-swim event Thursday morning, a swimmer apparently began to have trouble and was seen slipping underwater.’

‘"It was pretty devastating. We were watching the athletes come in from their swim, and for some reason, I was watching Lazar. It looked like he was struggling a little bit. Very, very quickly, he kind of did a couple of circles; he was, like, turning around trying to get air, and he was underwater," Learn said. "It happened so fast. There were 10 of us that saw it, we started screaming for the lifeguard. We were so far away, jumping in wouldn't have been an option."’

‘Learn said lifeguards were near Dukic on paddle boats, but to him, it appeared like they were watching the finish line and not the approaching swimmers.’

Just crushing.

‘According to Jauch, the victim was unconscious. She told the other driver to break the window to get him out. She said a man ran from the parking center and used a knife to break out the window, cutting his arm.’

‘Jauch said she learned CPR when she was a lifeguard a long time ago. However, she took a refresher course in February, mostly to help protect her toddler, River.’

‘“I was shaking so bad, but like I said, you just go into a zone. You don’t even think about it,” Jauch told News 2 as she stood in front of Fire Station 6 in Franklin on Thursday, Aug. 8.’

‘Late last year, Jimmy was struck down by a life-threatening infection that attacked his heart - he then underwent successful open heart surgery. 

A team of specialists discovered his body was shutting down because an infection in his blood was causing endocarditis - a life-threatening inflammation of the heart.’

‘By the time he was wheeled into the operating theatre for a open heart surgery, his doctors said he had just hours to live - In a marathon seven-hour surgery, the physicians successfully replaced his damaged valves and repaired his heart.’

Still not sure what happened to his hip.

Hey, that was about the same time Susan Wojcicki came down with lung cancer.
