#1 The Impulsion Foundation: Ryan Haselden’s Medical Emergency Sparks a Movement in CPR/AED Training and Horse Show Saftey
Source: theplaidhorse.com
‘On her 14th Birthday, Ryan Haselden’s heart stopped three jumps into the Venice Equestrian Tour 1.20 m Stakes Class.’
Happy birthday.
‘February 19, 2025, unfolded in typical fashion for Ryan, with the added excitement of reaching a new teenage milestone. No one could predict that Ryan’s life would change in a heartbeat while on her second mount of the day, Hector Du Gue.’
Plenty of people could have predicted it.
‘For spectators in the crowd, including Ryan’s father, Will Haselden, it appeared that after soaring over the first few obstacles, Ryan went limp on the way to fence four.’
‘Confused by the sudden lack of directions, her horse instead jumped the shrubbery to the side of the jump, and Ryan slid off.’
‘Their daughter’s heart had stopped. She’d gone into cardiac arrest.’
‘When an automated external defibrillator (AED) appeared at the scene moments later, paddles surged electricity through her, and Ryan’s heartbeat returned. She was airlifted to a nearby hospital.’
‘Ryan survived because Koch helped McFee facilitate what Will called “Four rounds of good quality CPR.” During this, Fox Lea staff swiftly arrived with the on-site AED that saved her.’
‘“Dr. Koch wasn’t even at the ring in a medical capacity,” said Will, “She was there spectating and to horse show herself. We are eternally grateful that she was there and able to assist.”’
‘The Impulsion Foundation was born following Ryan’s hospitalization to seize the abundant compassion swirling around the horse community and to cement measures to make all horse shows safer.’
‘Ryan was working on her pilot’s license prior to the incident.’
Pilot’s license, did you say?
#2 Expert suggests structural issue or medical emergency might have downed plane in Brooklyn Park
Source: fox9.com
VIDEO
Yeah someone’s doorbell camera actually caught this plane falling.
‘BROOKLYN PARK, Minn. (FOX 9) - The single-engine turboprop plane that crashed into a house in Brooklyn Park on Saturday could have plummeted to the ground for a couple of reasons, including a structural issue or a medical emergency, a former commercial airline pilot said.’
‘The plane appeared to nosedive before crashing into a home at 109th Avenue North and Noble Parkway in Brooklyn Park on Saturday afternoon. Although officials have not yet identified the person killed, U.S. Bank executive Terry Dolan, 63, is believed to have been the only person on board the aircraft, which was registered to him, according to the bank. One person was inside the home at the time of the crash but was able to escape, officials said.’
Wow.
‘Dan Bubb, a former commercial airline pilot, said the doorbell video showing the plane plummeting vertically onto the ground caught his attention.’
‘"That tells me that there might have been some sort of structural failure. There possibly could have been a medical episode with the pilot," he said. "Because this plane was descending so rapidly toward the ground, it tells me that it’s quite possibly in a stalled condition and could not recover from it...."’

Global warming strikes again.
It's Official: They're Blaming Global Warming
Looks like the raging climate activist set has done some of the heavy lifting for us. Reading these articles about medical emergencies, I come across an awful lot of deaths that are outright blamed on heat. If they make their case strongly, then I just skip them. I’m not trying to chase down every thread of media malfeasance when I’m putting together…
‘A body has been found in the search for a missing 15-year-old boy. The teenager vanished in broad daylight yesterday while swimming in a lake at Beckenham Place Park in Lewisham, London at around 3pm.’

#17 Robotic surgery saved a woman through multiple medical emergencies
Source: news.llu.edu
‘When Grace Chan looks back on the past few years, it feels like a whirlwind of hospital rooms, life-changing diagnoses, and moments where the future was uncertain.’
True.
‘In an impossibly short period of time, she faced a kidney tumor, heart disease, and a life-threatening brain aneurysm.’
Sounds about right.
‘Grace’s journey began with what seemed like a routine visit to her primary care physician. She had no reason to suspect anything was wrong, until tests revealed blood in her urine. Further scans uncovered a mass on her kidney. The good news: it was benign. The bad news: it had to be removed.’
‘As if a kidney mass weren’t enough, the most terrifying moment of Grace’s journey came unexpectedly when she collapsed in her own home.’
‘A brain aneurysm had ruptured. It was a medical emergency of the highest order.’
There’s more.
‘Grace had been on medication when she went in for what should have been a routine dental appointment. But soon after, something felt off. At first, it was subtle; fatigue, a lingering feeling of unease. Then, her condition deteriorated.’
‘Doctors diagnosed her with endocarditis, a dangerous infection of the heart’s inner lining.’
Sometimes those things just wear out, I suppose.
‘The infection had damaged her mitral valve, a critical valve that helps regulate blood flow through the heart.’
And that’s how the cookie crumbles in TROME.
#18 Medical emergency interrupts church launch
Source: inforum.com
This article is written in a curious man-in-the-moment style that, like an Impressionist painting, conveys the feelings of the scene, even though the details are left a bit fuzzy. Long and short, a guy had a heart attack (I think) during a church service.
West Fargo, North Dakota — ‘“Someone call 911,” I hear, sending those closest to the distressed man scrambling for their phones. By now, the sanctuary is filled with the voices of hundreds of people praying, in unison, for God’s assistance.’
Present tense. M’kay.
‘Now aware of the emergency, the bishop pauses his sermon, and in advance of the emergency medical team’s arrival, a woman begins administering chest compressions to the victim in row two, apparently to revive his heart.’
‘I watch with gratitude as a deacon approaches the man with blessing oils, as the young crew takes his vitals and carries him to a gurney, and as our bishop steps down to pray over him before he is led to the waiting ambulance.’
Heartwarming. Hope he prayed kinda quick.

#20 What is an amniotic fluid embolism? Influencer Hailey Okula’s deadly childbirth complication explained
Source: nypost.com
‘Hailey Okula — a nursing influencer known as “Nurse Hailey” — died late last month of complications from giving birth to her first child, her husband Matthew Okula, announced in a heartbreaking Instagram post Tuesday.’
‘He subsequently revealed to Fox 11 Los Angeles that the cause of death was amniotic fluid embolism (AFE), a rare and often fatal complication that is one of the leading causes of death during and just after childbirth.’
‘Her death was made all the more tragic by the fact that she and her husband had been struggling to get pregnant for two years — a journey that she chronicled to her 425,000 Instagram followers.’
To answer the question posed in the title:
‘[Amniotic fluid embolism] is an unpredictable and life-threatening labor-related emergency that occurs when amniotic fluid — the protective liquid surrounding a baby during pregnancy — enters the mother’s bloodstream.’
‘While the exact cause remains unknown, it’s believed that during labor or delivery, amniotic fluid or fetal material may inadvertently mix with the mother’s blood.’
‘In some cases, this leads to an overwhelming immune response, causing the mother’s body to react violently.’
‘AFE is exceedingly rare, with estimates suggesting it occurs in approximately 1 in 40,000 pregnancies. However, with a mortality rate of 11% to 44%, it is one of the leading causes of maternal death.’
‘A 2014 analysis noted that “AFE has become more common in recent years, for unclear reasons.”’
Well, I don’t know about that. I couldn’t discern any rise from the article linked. I did find this article analyzing rates from 2000 - 2019, which reports an average of 4.9 cases per 100,000 births in that time period, and DuckDuckGo’s AI-assisted search told me there were 6.0 cases per 100,000 in the US in 2022, but it didn’t have anything to tell me about the other years from 2021 to the present. It would be interesting to find out.

‘Fortunately, there were not only two doctors onboard, but cardiac specialists. Indeed, it is not every day you hear, “Ladies and gentlemen. If anyone has nitroglycerin, would you please ring their call button?”’
‘Pilots put the “petal to the metal” so the plane arrived early in Japan and avoided a costly diversion.’

‘Before his 2023 flare, Tom suffered from the condition towards the end of 2022.’

How surprising.
‘His unexplained BP fluctuations have raised serious concerns, and further tests are still required.’
Baffling. Totally unexplained.
‘“The big question: How did my BP shoot up so high and suddenly dropped without warning?”’
Great question.
Guy’s still baffled. His doctors are baffled. Everyone’s just walking around baffled. Which doesn’t stop him from listing health advice in bullet points.
I’ll spare you the details.
#36 Man Dies After Medical Incident in Lewisham
Source: uknip.co.uk
‘A man has died in hospital following a medical incident that took place in Lewisham during the early hours of Wednesday, April 2.’
In the UK and Europe they always refer to a “hospital” as a state of being and not a place. I wonder about the etymology of that word.
‘Emergency services were called to Brownhill Road, near Bowness Road, at approximately 2 am after receiving reports of a man suffering a medical emergency.’
‘Officers from the Metropolitan Police and London Ambulance Service crews arrived at the scene, and the man was immediately taken to hospital. Unfortunately, despite the efforts of paramedics, he was pronounced dead shortly after.’
