The Rise of the Medical Emergency, Pt. 30

JUN 20 UPDATES
1) Children injured in Windsor school bus-car collision
This time, at least it wasn’t the bus driver.
‘A collision between a small school bus carrying autistic children and a car at the intersection of Huron Church Road West and Tecumseh Road West left several children with minor injuries.’ [Emphasis added]
‘Windsor police say six children from the school bus were taken to hospital with minor injuries. “It is believed that the driver of the vehicle had a medical emergency,” police said in an email.’ [Emphasis added]
Here’s from this video interview with the grandfather-and-daughter team that stopped to help:
“That man came through that intersection so fast there was no time for anybody to react.”
In praise of the driver, he remarked: “She made sure he hit her instead of the back of that bus.”
Sheesh. A day for heroes, that one.
2) Kesha says she ‘almost died’ this year before doctors found ‘serious’ medical issue
‘Kesha has opened up about a time in which she “almost died” earlier this year after suffering a medical emergency.
The US pop singer, 36, revealed in an interview with Self that she was diagnosed last year with the autoimmune disease CVID (common variable immunodeficiency).
CVID is estimated to affect between 25,000 and 50,000 people globally, and can cause the immune system to mistakenly target healthy parts of the body. Symptoms are extremely varied, but can include fatigue and digestive problems and can lead to complications such as lung disease.’ [Emphasis added]
‘Last year, the “Tik Tok” singer-songwriter froze her eggs in a fertility procedure. On New Year’s Eve, she played a gig in the Bahamas, before falling ill and becoming unable to walk.
After being rushed to hospital, it was discovered that she had suffered an “uncommon yet serious” complication from the procedure, which may have been partially caused by her weakened immune system.’ [Emphasis added]
3) ABSN student Taylor Mellow honored for life-saving efforts following wreck
‘[…] Mellow reacted quickly and confidently to begin offering CPR to the driver who crashed his SUV in front of Mellow’s Greensboro home after suffering a medical emergency.’ [Emphasis added]
Glad we got these types running around. She’s probably shotted too, though, so…
‘[…] an SUV had struck [a] truck head-on and pushed it back about 25 yards. Investigators would later say they thought it was traveling about 45 to 50 miles per hour at the time of impact.’ [Emphasis added]
4) Driver injured in collision with fire station on Skyline Drive
‘A woman was taken to Jennie Stuart Medical Center Tuesday morning after she struck a Hopkinsville Fire Department station on Skyline Drive.
It happened about 6 a.m. at Station 2 on Skyline Drive, according to HFD Lt. Payton Rogers, when a vehicle struck the side of the fire station. It caused moderate damage to both the exterior and interior of the building. It is believed the crash was caused by a medical emergency.
The driver, 60-year-old Paula Robinson of Hopkinsville, was transported to Jennie Stuart for leg pain. No firefighters or EMS personnel were injured in the incident.’ [Emphasis added]
5) Driver suffers fatal medical emergency on Highway 89
‘One person is dead after what appears to have been a medical incident on Highway 89 near Conoco and Matador Coffee on Monday morning.’ [Emphasis added]
‘[…] a woman had experienced what investigators believe was a medical emergency while behind the wheel of her car. According to CCSO, Passers-by found her car rolling off the roadway with the driver slumped over the steering wheel. Passersby were able to get the woman out of the car, and when deputies arrived they determined that she had died on scene.
Paxton said the incident is being investigated, but no one other than the driver was injured. The vehicle did not collide with other cars or damage any infrastructure.’ [Emphasis added]
6) Firefighters extinguish brush fire, rescue teen at Diamond Head

‘[…] at 10:53 a.m., a 911 call was received for a female, teen hiker with a medical emergency at the Diamond Head Crater Trail.
Five units with 16 personnel responded, with the first arriving on scene six minutes later.
The teen was hiking when she experienced a medical emergency and was unable to descend on her own.’ [Emphasis added]
‘After hiking up to meet the girl, providing a medical assessment and basic life support, HFD’s Air 2 helicopter airlifted her to a nearby landing zone.’
7) Shelby County Sheriff’s Office investigates death of inmate
Source: www.shelbycountyreporter.com
‘On June 15, at approximately 10:50 a.m., during a safety check by jail deputies, [the inmate] was found to be suffering a medical emergency. Shelby County jail deputies and the jail medical staff immediately began emergency life-saving efforts.
Southeast Shelby Rescue responded to assist, and Files was transported to the hospital where he remained under the care of the hospital staff until he was pronounced deceased at approximately 9:00 p.m. on Saturday, June 17.’ [Emphasis added]
8) Two men died from ‘preexisting conditions’ while in custody at the Harris County Jail, officials say

‘Ray Rattler, 56, was charged with aggravated robbery with a deadly weapon and booked on May 22, according to court records. The sheriff’s office says he was taken to Ben Taub on Wednesday due to his “deteriorating health,” and was later declared dead on Saturday afternoon.’ [Emphasis added]
9) Grateful for a caring community
Well, this is a first. This is a columnist who is writing a column about his own medical emergency-induced car wreck.
‘It was a simple car wreck or more accurately my SUV contacted the side of a semi-trailer hard enough that the semi-trailer’s rear wheels rolled over the engine compartment of my automobile.’ [Emphasis added]
Holy cow. Key phrase: “more accurately.”
‘Grannie Annie and I were bounced around a bit tied in with seatbelts. No inflation of the airbags. No bones broken just bumps and bruises and for the old guy a pretty good concussion.’
‘Neither Grannie Annie nor I have any memories of the crash scene or transportation to the Emergency Room.’ [Emphasis added]
Weird. So, what happened?
‘For me my circulatory system suffered a “heart block” (google it) heartbeat of 30 beats per minute which didn’t return to normal 72 beats per minute until the minute when they loaded me onto a helicopter for transport […]’ [Emphasis added]
“Heart block” is some kind of disruption of the electrical signal to the heart. I know that because I googled it.
10) Kyle Matthew Brown, Canfield, Ohio
‘We are heartbroken over the loss of our close friend, son, brother, husband and father, Kyle Matthew Brown, who unexpectedly received a higher calling on Saturday, June 10, 2023, after suffering a medical emergency while in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.’
Adieu.
