The Rise of the Medical Emergency, Pt. 29
A flying doctor is baffled, a cabin crew are heroes, one child goes into cardiac arrest, and one dies at sea, while mountain bikers keep falling, and drivers keep driving -- into the wrong things.
JUN 19th REPORTS
1) City doctor saves man who fell ill in flight from Delhi
Source: timesofindia.indiatimes.com
‘A city-based anaesthesiologist on Monday saved the life of a 36-year-old man on board a flight from Delhi to Vadodara. Responding to the mid-air medical emergency, Dr Divya Mathur attended to the man with low pulse rate and sweating heavily inside the flight.’ [Emphasis added]
‘“There was an in-flight announcement about a passenger needing immediate medical attention. I responded and found that the man was having a low pulse rate and was sweating heavily but was conscious,” said Mathur.’ [Emphasis added]
‘“It seemed he was suffering from hypertension and might not have taken his medicine. I thought it was a vasovagal episode but the first priority was to control his pulse rate. With the help from flight staff, we managed put him on the three-pair seat and elevate his legs for the flow of blood towards the brain,” said Mathur.’ [Emphasis added]
‘“Since the patient was conscious, there was no need for a cardiac massage. We gave him ORS and juice which helped in controlling the pulse rate. The youth was fine after 15 minutes,” she said.’ [Emphasis added]
‘“His family denied of [sic] any medical history but it might be a vasovagal syncope or start of a heart attack and a check-up is necessary in such cases,” said Mathur, adding that after Covid-19, young persons in general are witnessing serious medical conditions.’ [Emphasis added]
After saving the man’s life, she recommended another booster shot. Probably.
2) Easyjet cabin crew perform CPR after passenger has 'heart attack'
Air quotes around “heart attack,” eh?
‘Easyjet cabin crew gave a passenger CPR after he suffered a "heart attack" during a flight. The man suffered a medical episode mid-air on the London-bound flight from Faro.’ [Emphasis added]
‘[…] he was believed to have suffered a heart attack en route, BirminghamLive reports. Following the landing, the man was taken away by paramedics.’ [Emphasis added]
Well, let’s hope they were right. CPR isn’t some kind of cure-all. They also include this note:
‘In April, an Easyjet flight was forced to make an emergency landing after the pilot fell ill. The plane from London Gatwick was heading to Agadir in Morocco but had to be diverted nearly 500 miles away.’ [Emphasis added]
That was also a standard medical emergency. Story here: standard.co.uk
3) Police name boy, 15, who died after getting into difficulty in the sea at Aberavon
‘A boy has died after an incident at a Welsh beach on Monday, June 19. After initial reports of a medical emergency, South Wales Police confirmed that a 15-year-old boy had died after entering the sea at Aberavon beach. There was a large emergency presence in the area and police asked people to avoid Aberavon beach while the incident was ongoing.’ [Emphasis added]
‘"A 15-year-old boy was located and despite the best efforts of members of the public and emergency services he sadly passed away. Anyone with information regarding the incident is asked to contact us" […]’ [Emphasis added]
Well, this one isn’t a “medical emergency” in the classic sense. But to me, these cardiac arrests in young children all fall into the category, because the element of mystery is there. Children don’t have heart attacks. I read a comment from a nurse one time who said she couldn’t convince a doctor the 10-year-old boy she was attending to was having a heart attack because, as he told her, “children don’t have heart attacks.”
4) Basildon medical emergency sees child suffer cardiac arrest
‘Two ambulances and an air ambulance rushed to Wickford Avenue, in Basildon, at roughly 4pm on Friday to reports of a child having a medical emergency.
It has now been confirmed that a child suffered a cardiac arrest near Basildon’s Upper Academy School.
Despite the best efforts of the paramedics, the child, a young girl, died.
The child is not believed to have been a pupil at the school.’ [Emphasis added]
‘Essex Police has confirmed there is no police investigation into the death.’ [Emphasis added]
5) Kansas man in ICU after unknown medical emergency causes wreck
This sounds like a 1-2 vaxx knockout to me. First shot: cancer. Two-inch tumor in the lungs. Second shot: Medical emergency while driving. Absolutely brutal.
‘A Paola, Kansas, man is recovering in the intensive care unit after suffering from a medical emergency while driving his car.' [Emphasis added]
“It’s been a rough couple months,” Misty Pratt said.
Her husband, Chris Pratt, was diagnosed with lung cancer in February.
“They found a 7-centimeter tumor in his left lung,” Misty Pratt said.’ [Emphasis added]
‘The father of two had surgery to remove part of his lung and spent the next few months recovering, trying to get back to work so that he could help support his family.
But just when things were starting to turn around, he faced a major setback while driving to work for his first day.’ [Emphasis added]
‘"Something happened, we’re not quite sure yet. But he ended up wrecking his car and has been in the ICU since."’ [Emphasis added]
Man. I thought I had problems. Solicitations for donations are in the link.
6) Man dies after medical emergency during London to Brighton bike ride
‘A man has died after a "medical emergency" while taking part in the London to Brighton bike ride on Sunday (June 18). The man, who was in his 60s, was pronounced dead in Smallfield, not far from Gatwick Airport. The man has not been publicly identified but it was been confirmed he was a cyclist taking part in the ride.’ [Emphasis added]
‘A spokesperson for Surrey Police said: "Officers were called at 09:56 this morning (18 June) by South East Coast Ambulance Service who were responding to a medical emergency on Redehall Road in Smallfield, involving a cyclist who had been taking part in the London to Brighton cycle ride. The cyclist, a man in his sixties, sadly died at the scene."’ [Emphasis added]
7) Hiker Assisted off Iron Mountain During Thunderstorm
‘Bartlett-Jackson Ambulance, Jackson Fire Department, Jackson Police Department, Bartlett Fire Department, Lakes Region Search and Rescue Team, Androscoggin Valley Search and Rescue Team, and New Hampshire Fish and Game Conservation Officers responded to Iron Mountain for a hiker reportedly experiencing a medical emergency.’ [Emphasis added]
SIX teams went after him! Must be quite the hike.
‘First responders located Robert Carroll of Hampton, NH, approximately .5 miles from the summit of Iron Mountain on the Iron Mountain Trail. Carroll had suffered a medical emergency, however, after rest he was able to walk with assistance to the trailhead.’ [Emphasis added]
‘No further information available at this time.’
8) Six chopper Sunday
Source: northernbeachesadvocate.com.au
‘Six helicopters were called to assist emergency services on the Northern Beaches yesterday.’
8a) ‘Just before 10.15am, the NSW Toll Ambulance Rescue Helicopter was then called to Bassett Street, Mona Vale, where a baby had reportedly stopped breathing. Three NSW Ambulance crews, including Intensive Care Paramedics and NSW Ambulance Inspector Mark Whittaker, responded to a home, requesting the attendance of the critical care medical team.
The helicopter landed at nearby Patricia Giles Reserve (main image and above), with the medical team, including a specialist doctor, collected and conveyed to the home by Inspector Whittaker. The baby was treated and taken to Northern Beaches Hospital in a stable condition by road, accompanied by the medical team.’ [Emphasis added]
8b) ‘Just before 1.30pm, the NSW Toll Ambulance Rescue Helicopter was tasked to the Bare Creek Bike Park at Crozier Road, Belrose, following a report of a man in his 50s losing consciousness after falling off his mountain bike’ [Emphasis added]
I’m going full De Croo here: I doubt the accuracy of this part. Did he lose consciousness first or fall first? De Croo, as described in Pt. 16 of this series, the Prime Minister of Belgium, also went unconscious — around the same time as falling off his bike, while wearing a helmet.
‘[P]aramedics called off the helicopter once it was clear the extent of the man’s injuries were not life-threatening.‘’
‘The man had regained consciousness, but was dazed, and was complaining of significant pain in his left elbow, which paramedics believed to be broken.’ [Emphasis added]
8c) ‘Just after 3.00pm, NSW Ambulance was then called to a report of a woman having a medical episode on a walking trail at Barrenjoey Headland, Palm Beach. Three NSW Ambulance crews responded, including a Special Operations Paramedic and Inspector Mark Hayes.’ [Emphasis added]
‘They located a woman in her 50s who had suffered a suspected medical episode, but had recovered sufficiently to be brought back down Barrenjoey Track from the headland by the ATV. She was assessed by paramedics and taken to Northern Beaches Hospital in a stable condition just after 3.45pm […].’ [Emphasis added]
And this final story, I mean… Who knows? There are a lot of ways to die in prison, and sometimes, like when a man’s facing a 30-year prison sentence, there may even be motives for it. But nonetheless, the shots don’t discriminate. They take both the cops and the criminals.
9) N.J. lawyer convicted of killing girlfriend dies after medical emergency in jail, authorities say
‘James Ray III, the Montclair attorney who was convicted last month of murdering his longtime girlfriend, Angela Bledsoe, and then fleeing to Cuba in October of 2018, died Sunday following a medical emergency at the Essex County Correctional Facility in Newark, where he was awaiting sentencing.’ [Emphasis added]
‘Although the cause has not been determined, Essex County officials say Ray was not involved in any altercation with another inmate and did not die violently.
Essex County Chief of Staff Phil Alagia said the cause of death will be determined by the Medical Examiner’s Office.’ [Emphasis added]
‘He was scheduled to be sentenced on July 11, and faced 30 years to life in prison.’
Adieu.
